Infections are sucha pervsive part of childhood that illness secms at times to be the norm. This is particularly true during the early years when the wold of the infant or toddler expands to large numbers of his peers in day care or preschool settingsand there is the inevitable exchange of microbes that is part of thoe new experiences. The Physician who treats children spends more time managing infections than all other types of diseases combined. It seemed strange,therefore,that there was no textbook devoted exclusively to therapy of infections in children. This vacuum was perccived by the publisher,Brian C.Decker,who invited me to serve as editor of Current Therapy of Pediatric Infectious Diseases. The premise of this book is simple and format is straightforward. Each author was told to make the assumption that that the doctor has already made the diagnosis before reaching for this book. Therefore,detailed discussions of signs,Symptoms,and differential diagnosis are not presented. This is not a textbook of infecious diseases,and so discussins of pathophysiology,epidemiology,and pathology are left to those texts where they rightfully belong. |
