<note>The value of The Manual of Surgical Therapeutics to its inteded surgical audience is demonstrated most of all by its presence in the coat pockets of residents, interns, and nurses'stations, and in the libraries of senior surgeons and physicians around the world. We are gratified at the positive response to successive edtionsof the Manual From Our Colleagues and who have reviewed it and, more imfortant,From those who use it every day, It is our intention to continue to keep this book a valuable refernce for all of our wide readership. INprepartion for the revesion of each new edtion,it has been the practice of our publisher,Little. Brown and Company,to arrange for two senior surgicalresidents at laeding academic institutions to review critically the contents of the proceding edion and to make sugestions for materialto be deleted or included in the forthcoming edition. Drs.GerhardMundinger and John Macoviak performed these tasks for the fourth edtion of the Manual, and their pointed and helpul commentaries were transmitted to the authors of each section. For the most part, the sugestions offeredby these reviewers have found a place in this, the fifth edition.</note>
