Abstract/Notes As an Intructor of prosthetics and orthotics for over 25 year and as a clinician working with patients requiring a prosthesis or orthosis. Isaw a needfor an updated combined text in prosthetics and orthotics. In addition. Information using the Guide to Physical Therapist terminology was needed. Much of the material in this text was expanded from class notes used in teaching prosthetics and orthotics at two physical therapy academic institutions. The fields of prosthetics and orthtotics have undergone tremendous strides in the past several years. Development of materials, examination and casting procedures, and fabrication have made enormous advances. One of the aims this text is to familiarize the physical therapy and physical therapist assistant student, as well as the practitioner, with these advances. This text also provides a systematic method of examination.evaluation, and implementation of various interventions in the management of the patient requiring a prosthesis or orthosis. The team approach to assist in maximizing potentialfor successful recovery is emphasized in this text. The number of prosthetic and orthotic components is varied overwhelming. It would be impossible to iclude all these components. In this text, some of the most commonly used components are presented. Regional differences my affect the use of specific components for a particular patient.
